Rihanna AMA 2013 Doobie: Stylist Explains Hair Wrap
If there is ever a question as to why Rihanna does something, there's only one simple answer...Rihanna does what she wants. We were, however, still left wondering why the now certified iconic star would wear a "doobie" to one of the most important and televised nights of her career. Well, her hairstylist finally answers the question.
So were watching the "American Music Awards 2013" excited to watch Rihanna accept her Icon Award and of course see what she's wearing. Her fashion never disappoints, always keeping fashion critics talking and actually complementing her on her looks. This year...we were all equally clueless. Rihanna's skirt and bra outfit was just sensational but she seemed to have forgotten to unwrap her hair? Why was Riri wearing a "doobie" on her head?
A "doobie" is African American and Latina technique of wrapping your hair around your head to preserve straightened hair. Even though you will often see Latin or African American women at stores or on the street with their "doobies", you will certainly not see them at a gala event with it still wrapped. The point of the hair wrap is to present and show off the now straightened and styled results of the "doobie" at the party.
Ursula Stephen, Rihanna's hairstylist, had this to say; "It was actually Rihanna's idea, she had her mind made up! Honestly, I was a little hesitant but I knew she could pull it off, so I was all for it". She also added that the "doobie" was a "30's look" and that women back then actually did wear the "doobie" in public, "using pins [as Rihanna did] to elevate the look". Rihanna is always pushing the envelope both with her music and her style. This was just something that left us a little confused since we felt it took away from what could have been a perfect look. But that's just us, we must not be at that level of fashion creativity.
"It was a nod to fashion, as an artist you cannot take yourself too seriously, it's about evolving, having fun, feeling beautiful and letting the look interpret the feeling, mood and the music!" Ursula said. She also let us know that there is much more to come from Rihanna's hair-do chair saying "there is a mental list of 'looks', not styles, that we want to try, more iconic sh*t is on the list". Should we be worried or excited?
What did you think of Rihanna's "doobie"? Love it or hate it?
