San Francisco Police Department Probed Over Racist Emails Exchanged Between Officers
San Francisco police are under investigation after dozens of racially tinged and homophobic texts were found to be transmitted among officers.
According to ABCNews.com, the transmissions are part of an ongoing corruption case now being probed targeting a member of the police force. The website adds the messages were uncovered by a member of the prosecution team assigned to handle the case against Sgt. Ian Furminger.
The veteran has already been convicted of corruption and investigators further contend the texts are yet another example of his suspect character, which they are seeking to demonstrate to a criminal court judge in hopes of keeping him jailed and held without bond.
"He is a virulent racist and homophobe who, even while a police officer, felt free to share his views with other individuals, including other San Francisco police officers," prosecutors contend in court documents. More specifically, the documents highlight text conversations between Furminger and other officers including a message where Furminger allegedly says, "We got two blacks at my boys school and they are brother and sister! There cause dad works for the school district and I am watching them like hawks."
In another message, Furminger allegedly fumes: "I hate to tell you this but my wife friend [sic] is over with their kids and her husband is black! If [sic] is an Attorney but should I be worried?"
The San Francisco Chronicle reports the probe has now widened to include other officers. A department spokesperson told the newspaper the officers being investigated have now been reassigned as the probe continues to unfold.
In court documents related to the messages allegedly exchanged by Furminger, prosecutors also noted they "should be taken into account" in denying him bail because "although these sort of overtly racist views sadly still are expressed in some communities, it is shocking and appalling to find a police officer in San Francisco who would give voice to them."
