The Dallas Cowboys announced that they have signed Greg Hardy to a one-year deal despite the possible suspension that could be handed by the National Football League to the defensive end for domestic violence.

Hardy visited the team facility on Tuesday before striking a deal with the Cowboys. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN revealed that the defensive end signed an $11.3 million contract, which could increase to as high as $13 million.

Hardy, a sixth-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, made a huge impact for the Carolina Panthers in 2012 and 2013 after tallying 11.0 and 15.0 sacks, respectively, which made him one of the best pass rushers in the league.

Following his impressive performances in the 2012 and 2013 NFL seasons, the Panthers placed the franchise tag on the former Mississippi standout in February last year that gave him a guaranteed salary of $13.1 million for the 2014 season.

However, Hardy was arrested in May for allegedly assaulting and threatening to kill his ex-girlfriend Nicole Holder. The 26-year-old played in their season opener, but was placed on the commissioner's exempt list, which ended his season, but was able to receive his full salary.

The charges against Hardy were dismissed last month after Holder did not cooperate in the trial. However, the league announced that they will conduct their own investigation, which means Hardy could still be suspended for violating the league's domestic conduct policy.

Previous reports indicated that the league could suspend Hardy for one to two games. Rumors also suggested that the league will consider handing a six-game suspension if they found strong evidences showing domestic violence.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a statement on Wednesday night that they are aware of the current situation of Hardy and the team made a thorough background check before offering a deal.

"We have spent a great deal of time over the last two days in meeting with Greg directly and gaining a solid understanding of what he is all about as a person and as a football player," Jones said in a statement. "A thorough background review of him, involving many elements of our organization, has been ongoing for the last few weeks."

Jones, whose team finished on top of the National Football Conference East standings last season, believes Hardy will be a critical element of the defensive scheme, which they are trying to improve this offseason.
