Android 5.0 Lollipop Update Release Date: HTC One M7 5.1 Lollipop, Sense 7 Never Coming OTA for Non-GPE Devices
HTC has been pretty decently good at keeping its Android 5.0 Lollipop update release date promises, at least compared to other Android OEMs. But owners of the HTC One M7, most of whom should have received Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA updates by now, will find the latest Android update news a little depressing.
Basically, most handset variants of the HTC One M7 are done getting Android updates, at least according to what VP of Product Management Mo Versi tweeted this week (via NDTV).
As the Android 5.1 update rolls out to Google's favorite Nexus devices (at least some of them: Still waiting for AT&T's update here on the Nexus 6), one curious HTC One M7 owner tweeted Versi, asking when the first HTC One flagship could expect an OTA rollout. Here's Versi's response:
"Only the GPE version of M7 will receive 5.1. Our target is early April. Thanks." - Mo Versi
There you have it, and despite several angry follow-up tweets about the situation from M7 owners, HTC's support plan doesn't appear to be changing.
At least it's good news for owners of the HTC One M7 Google Play Edition (GPE), but all other HTC One M7 handsets appear to be locked into Android 5.0.2 Lollipop with the Sense 6 UI -- despite complaints about the first edition of Android L's bugs with the M7 and protestations that HTC promised "at least 2 years" of support for the device.
What will HTC One M7 (non-GPE) users be missing? The Android 5.1 Update contains stability improvements and support for multiple SIM cards, HD voice and Device Protection (Google's version of Activation Lock) on compatible devices.
Of course, there's also HTC's Sense 7 UI, launching on the new HTC One M9 and confirmed for rollout to all 2014 HTC handsets this year.
Sense 7 offers more contextual (time and location-based) content, like news and agenda items first thing in the day in the "Morning Bundle," nearby restaurant suggestions at meal time, and customizations like a theme-maker and the ability to add and remove buttons from the navigation bar.
