The San Diego Chargers have to make a big decision regarding their star quarterback Philip Rivers this NFL offseason.

General manager Tom Telesco recently said, "He's our guy. Like I've said before, we'd like to extend him. And when he's ready to do that, we'll get moving on it."

Rivers is in the final year of his contract, in which he is scheduled to make $15.75 million and count just over $17 million against San Diego's salary cap. The Chargers and general manager Telesco would like to get a new deal done before next season begins and avoid losing him after next year.

"What I can control and all I know as of today, I am signed up for one more year. I guess things could change, but with all the uncertainty in many aspects, I don't see it changing before camp gets here, and when camp gets here I'm even more certain to play it out," Rivers said.

Rivers has played his entire 11-year career for the Chargers since being drafted by the team in 2004. Although it would be weird seeing Rivers in a different uniform, it appears as if Rivers isn't very eager to get a new deal done in a hurry. Talks of the Chargers possibly moving to Los Angeles in 2017 have some wondering if this could have an impact of the Rivers decision.

The Chargers have missed the playoffs four of the last five years. Maybe Rivers wants to take his talents to a different team after the 2015 season and finally have a chance at winning the Super Bowl. The only realistic chance San Diego ever had at a Super Bowl was in 2007 when they had LaDainian Tomlinson. That squad made it to the AFC Championship game, but lost to the New England Patriots, 21-12.

The Chargers shocked the world when they let Drew Brees walk in 2006 to the New Orleans Saints. Letting Rivers walk as a free agent after this upcoming season would sting, but it wouldn't destroy the Chargers. Again, this team has failed to make the playoffs even with Rivers four of the last five seasons. Since 2011, Rivers is 33-31 as the Chargers starting quarterback. He hasn't guided the Chargers to a 10-win season since 2009. Obviously that's not all his fault, but the reality is the Chargers aren't benefiting from Rivers at all.

You could very well argue it's just better for San Diego to let Rivers walk after next season and just rebuild. The Chargers will most likely franchise tag Rivers after next season.

Now here's where things get a little bit tricky. According to multiple reports, the Chargers are rumored to be interested in trading Rivers in an effort to land Marcus Mariota in the draft. San Diego has the No. 17 overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft, and Mariota is expected to be off the board by then. Rivers is a terrific quarterback, but the Chargers have to have a backup plan in case he bolts (no pun intended) after next season.

The Philadelphia Eagles would be the most likely buyer considering their head coaches ties to Mariota and their willingness to trade so often.

Eagles head coach Chip Kelly has been making a lot of big moves this offseason that have some fans scratching their heads. Sam Bradford has played just seven games the last two combined seasons, and Mark Sanchez is, well not a quality starter.

As crazy as a mega trade between the Eagles and Chargers may seem, it could be possible.
