There's only 12 games remaining in the 2014-15 NBA season.

The standings in the Eastern Conference are constantly changing every day. Currently, the Atlanta Hawks sit atop the East, and the Cleveland Cavaliers aren't far behind.

The Hawks are 53-17 with a 13-game lead in the Southwest division over the Washington Wizards. The Hawks also hold a huge division lead over the Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornets and Orlando Magic. The Hawk's 53 wins is second in the league behind only the Golden State Warriors, who have 57 victories.

The Hawks have been a very balanced squad all season, but a recent slump has opened the door for the Cavaliers. The Hawks have lost their last three consecutive games, which were against the Oklahoma City Thunder by eight points, San Antonio Spurs by 19 points, and the Warriors by 19 points. The Hawks have balance, but they lack superstar talent and championship experience. Many are beginning to doubt whether or not this team can defeat the Cavaliers in the postseason.

Paul Millsap and Jeff Teague have been the best scorers for the Hawks all season, while Dominican big ban Al Horford has been a reliable rebounder for the team. Kyle Korver has been lights out from the perimeter. In all likelihood, the Hawks will finish with the No. 1 seed and home-court advantage in the East throughout the playoffs, but a three-game losing streak and with a hot Cavaliers team isn't how they want to end the season.

The Wizards showed promise early in the season, but their disappearing act over the last month has them out of any possibility of finishing in first place. The Chicago Bulls are once again without Derrick Rose, and the Toronto Raptors have just 42 wins.

The Cavaliers have been the best NBA team over the last two months, and they've successfully won seven of their last eight games. It will be extremely hard to catch the Hawks at the top spot given the fact that there's so few games remaining, but the Cavaliers are looking like the team to beat in the East rather than the Hawks.

LeBron James leads the Cavaliers in assists, points scored and free throws made this year. Kyrie Irving is looking to make his first career postseason appearance, as is Kevin Love. Love has been criticized for his defensive play and inability to make moves in the post area, but he's still averaging 10.1 rebounds per game. The Cavaliers are 46-26 this season with a big game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday.

The Cavaliers and Hawks are by far the two best teams in the East as the season winds down. The Hawks have the superior record and will probably have home-court advantage in the playoffs, but the Cavaliers are the streaking team.
