Grammy Nominations 2014 Full List: Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar Lead Hip-Hop To Night Of Celebration
The highly anticipated nominations for the 56th annual Grammys has arrived over the weekend, and the list suggests that it will be a quite memorable night, especially for hip-hop.
To start with, hip-hop mogul Jay-Z tops the amount of nominations by earning nine Grammy nods in total, including the categories for Best Rap Song, Best Rap Album and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. He's followed by a four-way tie for the second-highest total, Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell Williams, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Justin Timberlake, all with seven nominations each. In other words, four of the five top acts come from the hip-hop/rap genre, with the fifth being Justin Timberlake, since he is technically a pop singer who is heavily influenced by hip-hop.
In many cases, especially in the major categories, hip-hop acts have been also nominated for performing music of other genres. For instance, the Record of the Year category features Pharrell Williams on Daft Punk's electronic number "Get Lucky" and on Robin Thicke's funky summer hit "Blurred Lines" featuring the rapper T.I. Similarly, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis receive a nomination for the Song of the Year category for Mary Lambert's pop love song "Same Love."
While Kendrick Lamar's "Good Kid, M.A.A.D City" and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's The Heist score nominations for Best Album, Kanye West receives no recognition in the main categories. In fact, West received far less than expected, scoring only two nominations, one for Best Rap Song, "New Slaves", and another for best Rap Album, Yeezus.
The 56th annual Grammys is slated to take place Jan. 26 in Los Angeles. Did your favorite artist score Grammy nominations? Check out the full list of 2014 Grammy nominees below.
