New Jersey police are investigating allegations that a member of rap star DMX's entourage robbed a man of at least $3,200 at gun point outside a Newark gas station.

While the probe is still described as being in the "early stages," according to NJ.com, Newark police Sgt. Ronald Glover explains the 21-year-old alleged victim claims he was outside an Exxon station just after midnight Sunday when he struck up a conversation with the fallen hip-hop star.

As the two talked rap music, a member of DMX's crew allegedly brandished a weapon and demanded money. The man added that as he took the money from his pocket, DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, grabbed it from his hands and took off in one of four black Cadillac Escalades the group was traveling in.

The man told police he was briefly able to follow the vehicles onto McCarter Highway. He was also able to write down the license plate number of at least one of the vehicles. Police have not yet indicated if the vehicle has been traced back to DMX based on the plate number.

Just hours earlier, the 44-year-old rapper performed at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Thus far, no arrests have been made in connection with the case and no formal charges have been filed, according to People.

A more than two decades long veteran of the rap game, DMX burst on the scene in the 1990s. In recent times, he has fallen on hard times. In the last few years, he has served jail time for offenses ranging from drug possession to animal cruelty to several parole violations.

In 2013 alone, he was arrested at least four different times in South Carolina on charges related to various traffic offenses, including driving with a suspended license.
