Malia Obama Driving: First Lady Says Secret Service Agents Taught Oldest Daughter How to Drive
Unlike most teens who are taught how to drive by their parents or a professorial instructor, Malia Obama received very special driving lessons from the U.S. Secret Service.
Ealier this week, First Lady Michelle Obama revealed that her oldest daughter was taught to drive by the Secret Service during an interview with TV host and celebrity chef Rachael Ray. Now, the 16-year-old is allowed to occasionally drive outside of the White House grounds on her own.
"The Secret Service [taught her], actually, because they wouldn't let me in the car with her," said Obama in an interview that is scheduled to air Thursday, reports The New York Daily News.
Mrs. Obama also admitted that it's a good thing that Secret Service stepped in to give the first daughter driving instructions since neither she nor President Barack Obama have driven in the last seven or eight years while living in the White House. As a result, the first lady said that she has forgotten some basic skills and couldn't advise Malia on how to park in a public lot.
"I barely know now too so I have to check with other sources," she said in an interview on "Live! With Kelly and Michael" on Monday, according to CNN.
Although Malia is typically protected by a security detail, Obama said she has gotten experience driving on her own.
"She always has security around. But in order for her to learn how to drive, she had to drive on her own. So once she was legally permitted to drive on her own, she gets in her car," she said.
Obama also told Ray that driving gives Malia the sense of being a normal teenager.
"Driving for Malia, I think, gives her a sense of normalcy, like the rest of her friends are doing. And my kids have got to learn how to live in the world like normal kids," she said.
