In just three days, Apple has sold more than five million units of its latest device.

But with so many Apple devices on the streets, Apple users might need to be a little bit more weary about how they use their devices in public.

New research is out that says one out of seven crimes in New York City so far this year involves the theft of an Apple product.

Of the more than 79,000 crimes so far this year in the big apple more than 11,000 involve apple. That's one out of seven.

Between Jan. 1 and Sept. 23, there were 11,447 incidents in which Apple products were stolen; an increase of 3,280 over the same period last year, or an increase of 40 percent.

The increase in incidents involving the theft of Apple products exceeded the increase in overall crime incidents of crime by 265.

Other big cities around the world are also reporting Apple crime.

The NYPD is urging customers to register their products. The NYPD stationed officers at 21 stores in the city where the iPhone 5 went on sale on Sept. 21 to help buyers register their new devices so they can be traced if stolen.

Apple also offers a free app, "Find My iPhone," for users who misplace their iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac. The Find My iPhone app allows users to use another iOS device to find their device and protect their data. Find My iPhone will help you locate your missing device on a map. You can then choose to display a message or play a sound, remotely lock your device, or erase your data on it.
