David Ospina vs. Wojciech Szczesny: Has Colombian Taken Hold of Starting Spot for Arsenal?
Goaltending controversies are among the most interesting in all of.
The goalie is in many respects the symbol of a team's stability and having a main man gives teams confidence. The lack of a main man, however, can create other kinds of issues.
For years, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has stood by Polish keeper Wojciech Szczesny. But the young netminder, who is entering his prime years, has been erratic at times and hard to pin down.
The result is that Wenger went out and got Colombian David Ospina to provide some competition to his standby in hopes of seeing greater consistency.
The trick worked, but for different reasons.
Szczesny has played 17 games in the Premier League this season, but will likely see his smallest total of games played since 2012-13 when he starred in just 25 EPL matches.
The reason? Ospina has taken over. The Colombian had not gotten his first start in England until Jan. 11 and since then he has played a whopping 11 games for Arsenal. Meanwhile, Szczesny has not gotten any league minutes since Jan. 1, a 2-0 loss against Southampton in which he was the culprit.
And what a switch it has been. Ospina has pitched six clean sheets in his time as the main man and has a record of 10 wins and one loss in England. He has also conceded just seven goals; Szczesny conceded 25 goals in his 17 matches and recorded nine wins, six draws and five defeats as Arsenal's main man.
Ospina's record has propelled Arsenal to second best in the League, seven points behind Chelsea. The chances of reaching the Blues are minimal 31 games into the season, but, without Ospina providing a solid net presence, chances are fewer.
What will this come to? It is possible that Szczesny may be on his way out, leaving the Colombian with the reins. Ospina is two years older than the Pole, but at 26 he is still in his prime years.
