Golden Globes Awards Nominations 2014: Favorites, Snubs, and Breaking Bad
There are hundreds of TV shows on the air but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association wants you to believe that only a select few shows are worthy of their prestigious nominations. The total membership of the HFPA is kept under wraps, but its members are all professional journalists that need to maintain a primary residence in Southern California. The point of this little biography is to illustrate a scary realization -- less than 100 people control the outcome of the 2nd biggest Awards show in Hollywood.
Not all the nominations are misplaced; after all Breaking Bad is arguably the greatest TV show of all time and Modern Family is a huge hit for ABC. However, how the Golden Globes cannot have massive American pop culture hits such as Mad Men and The Walking Dead makes sense. It doesn't.
The leading vote getters this go around comprise of The Good Wife (ABC) with four nominations followed closely behind by Breaking Bad (AMC) and House of Cards (Netflix) with three apiece. Downton Abbey, the period historical drama from Masterpiece Classic only managed to snag one nomination for its fourth season, but Best Drama is a terrific draw.
What storylines will the Globes contain this year? Well, it will be interesting to see if Bryan Cranston finally breaks through and wins a Golden Globe for Best Actor (Drama). He has been nominated for the very same award every year since 2010 walking away empty each time. It's a shame because his portrayal of Walter White in Breaking Bad (2008-2013) enabled him to win 3 straight primetime Emmy Awards. Not to mention many consider Cranston's acting to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. Just ask award magnet Sir Anthony Hopkins what he thinks about Walter White the character and his descent into meth cooking misery. Hopkins told Cranston via email that "Your performance as Walter White was the best acting I have seen -- ever." He went on to say that, "You and all the cast are the best actors I've ever seen."
So there may be many shows that should have been nominated, but this year has some pretty stacked competition. Who do you want to win?
The Golden Globes air Jan. 12, 2014 on NBC.
