Serial Bride: New York Woman Faces Charges for Marrying 10 Different Men
An accused serial bride is facing criminal charges after authorities say she got married 10 times without divorcing all of her husbands.
In her most recent marriage license, which was filed in February 2010 in the Bronx, New York, Liana Barrientos, 39, claimed that she had never been married before. However, prosecutors say that is far from the truth. Not only did she file 10 different marriage licenses from 1999 to 2010, but she also failed to divorce all of her husbands, reports CBS New York.
A New York detective says that Barrientos allegedly told him that her last marriage was "her first and only marriage." In reality, Barrientos and her husbands filed marriage licenses throughout New York state, including Westchester County, Rockland County and Long Island, authorities said.
She even filed multiple marriage licenses within the same month, prosecutors said.
According to KTLA, "Barrientos married Mohamed Gerbil in November 1999, Ahmed Allam in November 2001, Habibur Rahman also in November 2001, Davit Koridze in February 2002, Duran Goktepe in March 2002, Aliaksandr Paharelau also in March 2002, Vakhtang Dzneladze in May 2002, Rashid Rajput in July 2002, Kakhaber Khorbaladze in August 2002, and Salle Keita in March 2010, prosecutors alleged."
After tying the knot, many of Barrientos' spouses filed for legal permanent resident status months, the DA's office said.
The New York Times reported that the Department of Homeland Security is also "involved" in the case.
Barrientos was scheduled to appear in court Friday for an arraignment on felony fraud charges for allegedly lying on the 2010 marriage license application.
A Facebook account belonging to Barrientos states that she "got engaged" in July 2013, reports the NYT.
It is not immediately clear whether or not any of the men who married Barrientos will also face charges in the case.
