'The Haunted Mansion' News Update: Ryan Gosling Joins Guillermo del Toro's new Film
Ryan Gosling will star in Guillermo del Toro's upcoming film "The Haunted Mansion."
Guillermo del Toro will direct and produce the film, which has been in the works at Disney for the past five years. Like "Pirates of the Caribbean," the film will be based on the popular attraction at the Disneyland theme park.
Del Toro first unveiled the project in July 2010 at Comic-Con but has been busy working on "Pacific Rim" and his upcoming film "Crimson Peak," which is slated for release in just a few months.
Disney already made "The Haunted Mansion" movie back in 2003 with Eddie Murphy, and even though it got panned by critics, it grossed $180 million worldwide.
Del Toro plans on making a darker film and said back in 2010, "If you take the children, they will scream."
The script is currently being written by D.V. DeVincentis
Gosling recently wrote, produced and directed "Lost River," which is receiving a limited release from Warner Bros.
Gosling is currently working on Shane Black's "The Nice Guys" with Russell Crowe and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" with Brad Pitt, Christian Bale and Steve Carell. He recently worked on "The Place Beyond the Pines" with Derek Cianfrance, "Only God Forgives" and "The Ides of March." Gosling has been nominated for the Oscar for his work on "Half Nelson" and scored Golden Globe nominations for "The Ides of March," "Crazy, Stupid, Love," "Blue Valentine" and "Lars and the Real Girl."
Del Toro recently directed "Crimson Peak" with Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam, Tom Hiddleston and Mia Wasikowska. He also directed "Pan's Labyrinth," which was nominated for six Academy Awards and won three including Art Direction, Makeup and Cinematography. He has also directed two "Hellboy" films and "Cronos."
Disney has been successful at adapting its animated films into live action and is currently working on new Marvel films. It is also expanding the Star Wars universe.
No release date will has been set for "The Haunted Mansion."
