A middle school student from Ohio seems to have put a new twist on the folklore of Robin Hood by stealing $25,000 from his grandfather and redistributing the money to his classmates.

Authorities say that a 13-year-old boy took the money from his grandfather over Spring Break and then began handing out $100 bills to his peers at the Claggett Middle School in the northeastern Ohio city of Medina. He also gave the money out to their relatives and friends.

Altogether, the young teen distributed thousands of dollar before school officials were made aware of the cash giveaway last Wednesday. Investigators managed to recover about $7,000 so far, but much of the money has already been spent, reports The New York Daily News.

Police are still investigating how and why the boy got the money from his 83-year-old grandfather, who lives in Medina Township, reports the Medina Gazette.

"I've never heard of a situation like this in the 17 or so years I've been a police officer. It's rather unique," Medina Sgt. Brett McNabb told the Gazette. "We don't know the details on how that occurred. We're still very early into this investigation. It's going to take a great deal of follow up," he added.

"He passed out quite a bit but not the full amount," McNabb said. "Several students ended up with portions of this money."

McNabb also said that some of the money had already been spent by "adults, guardians or associates of the children who received the money."

"Several adults are under investigation for their role in this incident," he added. "We have recovered some of the property that was purchased with this money."

According to Claggett Principal T.J. Hellickson, he and school officials "worked with the Medina law enforcement to support the family and the investigation."

It was not immediately known whether or not charges could be filed in the case.
