Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather Fight: Mayweather Has Bad Hands But Favorite to Win, Says Ronnie Shields
Boxing trainer Ronnie Shields believes Floyd Mayweather Jr. will win against Manny Pacquiao in their highly anticipated showdown, despite having bad hands.
Mayweather, who will put his perfect 47-0 record on the line against Pacquiao on May 2 at MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, has been struggling with bad hands over the past several years and is reportedly experiencing pain in preparation for the biggest fight of his career.
Shields said in an interview with On The Ropes Boxing Radio that Mayweather's hand problem makes it impossible for him to knock Pacquiao out in their Cinco de Mayo weekend fight, but he cannot see the Filipino boxing icon scoring a knockout as well because of the reigning pound-for-pound king's defensive prowess.
"I think Floyd's defense is too good and I don't believe Floyd punches hard enough because of his hands to knock Manny out," Shields said when asked if fans should expect a knockout win on May 2. "I think the fight can get stopped maybe on a cut, but other than that, I don't see this fight being really anybody getting knocked out."
When pressed to predict the outcome of the upcoming super fight, which is expected to set boxing records in terms of total revenue, Shields said that he will put his money on Mayweather.
Skills-wise, Shields believes there is no glaring difference between the two boxing superstars, but he is convinced Mayweather will win by decision by leaning on his vast experience. Shields, who previously trained boxing legend Mike Tyson, said Mayweather knows how to keep his perfect record, while Pacquiao has already tasted defeats.
"I give the edge to Floyd Mayweather for the simple reason that Floyd has never lost before," Shields added. "Floyd knows how to win, he knows how to pull out victories. Pacquiao, he knows how to lose, but Floyd is a very intelligent fighter and when you look at it, he picks you off very quickly and once he does that, he's very difficult guy to fight."
Shields also added that Mayweather knows how to impress the judges. Despite having bad hands, the world renowned trainer said that Mayweather can land solid punches followed by combinations, which might be enough to win rounds en route to a decision win against his Filipino nemesis, who is the reigning WBO welterweight champion.
