The Powerball Mega Millions game now features a $550 million jackpot and people from all around the United States are looking to cash in big.

The Mega Millions drawing is the second largest in history, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The lottery system recently changed when the $1-per-ticket Mega Millions program made five of the six numbers needed for a jackpot victory range from 1 to 75. The previous chances were 1 to 56, NBC News reported. Paul Otto, who serves as the Virginia Lottery's executive director, explained the change to the Associated Press.

"The revamp has given us a game that has a better chance of rolling and growing more quickly," he said. "There's some things we can control, there's some things that we can't control. Of the things we can control, those changes seem to be working."

The largest ever Mega Millions jackpot was worth $656 million, and it was split between three different players in the states of Illinois, Kansas and Maryland.

"I don't usually buy Mega Millions, but I saw it on the news last night," Megan Leo said to the Associated Press in Des Moines, Iowa. "Usually when the jackpot is this high, whether it's Powerball or Mega Millions, I'll play. Can't win if you don't try."

The lottery was standing at $400 million but was bumped up to $425 million before climbing to $550 over the weekend.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution said that tickets in New York State were selling at a pace of $500,000 an hour. The state usually averages about $60,000 and $70,000 per hour, according to Christy Calicchia.
