NBC Universo to Launch 'Provocative' Mexican Series, 'Crónica de Castas' Featuring Angela Molina and Naian Gonzalez Norvind
NBC Universo is gearing up to launch its nine-episode series that created quite the buzz when it first launched in Mexico for its compelling yet controversial storyline, which touches upon "racism and bigotry, among other hot button themes."
In addition to its U.S. debut, this series marks the directorial debut for well-known Mexican actor Daniel Giménez Cacho. The cast includes award-winning Spanish actress Angela Molina as well as Naian Gonzalez Norvind and Harold Torres.
Molina is known for "Live Flesh," "That Obscure Object of Desire" and "Snow White." González Norvind is known for her roles in "Everybody's Got Somebody... Not Me," "Lluvia de Luna," and "Deshojando Margaritas." Torres, who is also an actor and casting director, is known for "Northless," "The ABCs of Death" and "Sin Nombre."
According to NBC Universo, the provocative series is filmed in the symbolic neighborhood of Tepito in Mexico City. The series revolves around the local Hotel Galicia and is interwoven with stories from several distinct characters.
The series takes place in Crónica de Castas, taking an intimate look at the complicated lives and personalities from every walk of life in that city. Among the characters are: Yolanda, a woman with a mysterious past who arrives after fleeing from Spain, and Lucia, an well-to-do girl looking to leave her violent home behind. The series will be looking to touch upon various controversial themes from racism to prejudice and social class issues.
"NBC Universo has promised U.S. Latinos exclusive, edgy programming with high-quality production, and Crónica de Castasis a spirited series that delivers on that commitment," said Margie Moreno, Vice President, Programming, NBC Universo. "Just as the series stirred deep emotions of many in Mexico, we expect Latinos here in the U.S. will also be moved by its great storytelling, polarizing characters and arresting moments."
The premiere of the scripted mini-series from Mexico, "Crónica de Castas," airs on Sunday, April 19 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. To check out a clip, click here.
