Miguel Cotto will defend his World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight title against Daniel Geale on June 6 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Cotto, who holds a 39-4 record with 32 knockout victories, has been linked to a fight against Geale over the past several weeks. While there has been no official announcement from the promoters of both fighters, Cotto confirmed reports about the fight through a post on his official Instagram account.

According to BoxingScene, the two camps agreed to 157-pound catchweight, three lower than the middleweight limit. Cotto has been a welterweight and a junior middleweight fighter for the majority of his career.

The 34-year-old Puerto Rican won the WBC middleweight title when he scored a 10th round knockout victory against Sergio Martinez in their 12-round title fight in June last year.

The win against Martinez was his second victory in as many fights under Freddie Roach with the first one coming against Delvin Rodriguez in October 2013. Before winning against Rodriguez and Martinez, the 34-year-old took a unanimous decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May 2012 and Austin Trout in December 2012.

On the other hand, Geale, who has 31 wins under his belt against just three defeats, is coming off a unanimous decision win against Jarrod Fletcher in December last year in Australia.

But before winning against Fletcher, Geale took a humbling loss as he was knocked out by unbeaten middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in the International Boxing Organization (IBO) and World Boxing Association (WBA) title fight in July last year, which came just one fight after also losing to Darren Barker in August 2013.

Geale, the former International Boxing Federation and WBA middleweight champion, was picked over several rumored opponents like Golovkin, Timothy Bradley and Cornelius Bundrage. Bradley was previously considered as frontrunner, but Cotto signed a deal with Roc Nation Sports.

Cotto was also linked to a showdown with former world champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, but negotiations for the fight did not come to fruition. Alvarez, who has a 44-1-1 record with 31 knockouts, picked James Kirkland for his next fight on May 9 at Minute Maid Arena in Houston, Texas.
