Things will heat up when "The Vampire Diaries" returns from a brief hiatus Thursday night as Elena begins to reevaluate her life as a vampire while Damon considers giving her the cure and viewers learn about the surprising connection Enzo has with Damon's mother, Lily

According to the synopsis for "I Never Could Love Like That," news about Jo and Alaric's engagement and expectancy may cause Elena to begin yearning for a simple and normal life as a human that would allow her to settle down and start a family of her own. On the other hand, a decision like this would have a major impact on Damon, who would be forced to face the hard realization that he will one day have to live without the love of his life.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, actor Ian Somerhalder revealed that Damon will struggle with the decision of whether or not to give Elena the cure for vampirism.

"[The gift] is so profoundly [huge] -- that's going to be the big catalyst; that's going to be the big thing that changes everything," said Somerhalder. "Having that knowledge that this exists is a big game-changer story-wise."

In a sneak peek video, Elena admits to Lily that she "sometimes" misses being human again while the two women and Damon are having breakfast.

Somerhalder also dropped spoilers about the struggle that Bonnie will have as she continues to adjust to living in a post-prison world.

"She's changing, and she's tired [of the ways things are] -- she wants her power back," Somerhalder explained. "She's tired of being the person that always gets hurt. She's tired of being that person. She has to define the boundaries before her, and Damon is no exception to that rule."

Another sneak peek clip shows Caroline coercing her exes to play a deadly game of "Caroline trivia."

"You both dated me, which means you should know everything about me, so I'm going to ask you some questions about myself, and whoever answers them right lives," Caroline explains.

Both men start off doing well in the game, until she throws a curve-ball question at them about her mother's final memory before her death.

In addition, actor Michael Malarkey told TVLine that fans will learn about Enzo's past and his shocking connection with Lily, who is the person that turned him into a vampire.

"We finally get to discover the truth about how Enzo was turned into a vampire, which is exciting," said the actor. "We have a little flashback episode which delves into all of that, and his connection to Lily Salvatore."

He went on to give details about Enzo's origins as a human-turned-vampire, telling THR how he met Lily.

"He was basically dying of tuberculosis, and he's trying to get on this passenger ship to New York, which apparently has this doctor on board who claims he can cure tuberculosis. He meets Lily literally on the docks as he's trying to board the ship," Malarkey said. "He's having trouble getting on, and she takes pity on him, and helps him board the ship, and makes these promises to him, and ends up turning him. He's just met her at that moment, so there's no relationship before [he's a vampire]."

He went on to hint how Enzo's relationship with Lily will affect his relationship with Damon and Stefan.

"There's going to be this element of being torn by his friendship with Damon -- who's a bit of a loose cannon by the end of the season -- as well as his friction with Stefan," Malarkey explains. "It ends with a prospect of this connection that Enzo has with Lily and what they're going to end up doing together."

Enzo's flashbacks are triggered by a conversation with Sarah, as she "turns the tables on him" and forces him to confront his past.

"Poor guy's got quite a bit of baggage," he admitted. "Getting into a relationship with someone might be a little forced at this stage in the game, but if there was even an inkling of that for him, it might be a grounding force. He could probably use a good woman to keep him from his wily ways."

Malarkey also opened up about the relationship that Enzo and Lily shared, saying, "It definitely starts off maternal in the flashbacks. He's very much a victim of circumstance, and she takes him under her wing. And in the present day, he's confronting her about what happened on the ship, and all that stuff. The relationship they do develop when he finds out the truth of what happens, they develop more of a kinship, as opposed to a maternal thing. I wouldn't say straight away there's a romance [angle], but I think we've left the door open for it to go any which way. There's definitely a chemistry there that is deep-rooted."

The synopsis for "I Never Could Love Like That" states:

"With their humanity turned off, Stefan and Caroline begin wreaking havoc at Whitmore, leaving Damon to come up with a risky plan involving Lily. After rushing to help Jo treat victims of Stefan and Caroline's latest killing spree, Elena discovers Jo is pregnant, prompting her to reevaluate her own life as a vampire."

Season 6, Episode 18 of "The Vampire Diaries," entitled "I Never Could Love Like That," will air Thursday, April 16 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
