Ohio Police Officer Refuses to Shoot Murder Suspect who Threatened to Shoot Him [Video]
A new video of an Ohio police officer refusing to shoot a murder suspect who charged at him is getting national attention.
The incident occurred on Thursday after police received a 911 call about a man who was accused of shooting and killing his fiancée and his best friend. The suspect, who has been identified as Michael Wilcox, 27, then led police on a chase through three counties near Cincinnati, reports ABC News. The chase ended in the town of New Richmond, Ohio, where Wilcox was confronted by New Richmond Police Officer Jesse Kidder.
Although dispatchers warned that the suspect may threaten suicide by cop and that he could have a gun in his car, Kidder refused to open fire even as Wilcox defied his commands.
In a video captured by Kidder's body-camera, Wilcox is seen aggressively running toward him while telling the cop to shoot him. At one point, the suspect threatens Kidder, saying, "shoot me or I'll shoot you." Still, Kidder continues to back away from the suspect with his gun drawn.
"No man, not going to do it!" said Kidder, a former Marine, in the video.
Eventually, Kidder, who became an officer in April 2014, stumbles and falls on the ground. Fortunately, backup arrived shortly thereafter, prompting Wilcox to comply with police.
Following the incident, Kidder recalled the series of events leading up to Wilcox's arrest during an interview with WLWT.
"I was trying to open a dialogue with him. 'I don't want to shoot you, get on the ground,' but he wasn't having it. He kept repeating, 'Shoot me.' At one point, he said 'Shoot me or I'll shoot you,'" Kidder said.
"He jumped out and he sprinted towards me. I had my firearm already drawn on me, and I told him to put his hands up in the air and he was screaming as he was yelling, 'Shoot me, shoot me'," Kidder continued.
Kidder went on to say that he thought about opening fire after he fell backward.
"He got towards my face right as I lost balance," Kidder said. "I'm thinking, at this point, that if he goes into attack me, that I'll have to use deadly force to defend myself."
New Richmond Police Chief Randy Harvey praised Kidder's response in the situation saying, "For him to make the judgment call that he did shows great restraint and maturity," Harvey told WLWT. "This video footage, it eliminated all doubt that this officer would have been justified if in fact it came to a shooting."
