From the "oops" files: Morton's Steakhouse has issued a formal apology to a cancer patient after telling him to remove his hat, and has also donated money to a cancer charity in the patient's honor.

According to Newsmax, the incident -- which occured in Tennessee -- happened when Robert Chambers, who is undergoing chemotherapy, was instructed to remove a wool beanie from his head because it reportedly violated the upscale steakhouse's dress code. Chambers, who was with a party of 14 and spent over $2,000 on his bill, was then approached by the manager of the steakhouse, who told him he should have brought a doctor's note or called ahead so that the restaurant could have set aside a more private dining area for their party.

Chambers eventually removed his hat; however, a heated exchange between his coworkers and restaurant staff ensued. The manager then flagged down two police officers and asked them to assist the group in leaving the steakhouse. While the party left, there were no reports of arrests.

And after a firestorm of social media controversy, Fox News is reporting that late Monday, COO Tim Whitlock personally reached out to Chambers to apologize. "There was a complete and total misunderstanding by our staff who had no idea that our guest had a medical condition. Our actions were uninformed and our intentions were not malicious."

Chambers later posted on his Facebook page accepting Whitlock's apology. "He was very apologetic and we had a good discussion. End result, Morton's will make a donation in the amount of our check to St Jude's Children's Hospital. Apology accepted time (to) be on. I have more important things to fight than Morton's," Chambers wrote.

Glad it all worked out in the end... although it never should have happened in the first place. A little sensitivity goes a long way.
