Now the chameleon is nearly unrecognizable as he takes on the infamous role of James 'Whitey' Bulger, one of the most notorious gangsters in U.S. history.
Bulger, a man who reportedly once occupied a spot right after Osama bin Laden on the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted Fugitives" list, has been stirring up trouble for decades and left his mark on South Boston like no other.
Directed by "Out of the Furnace" and "Crazy Heart" filmmaker Scott Cooper, the gripping film is based on the book by Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill and the screenplay by Mark Mallouk and Jez Butterworth. Producers of the highly-anticipated film include: Brian Oliver, Tyler Thompson, John Lesher, Patrick McCormick, Scott Cooper.
The film unfolds in 1970s South Boston, where FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James "Whitey" Bulger (Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. "The drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history."
In addition to Depp, the cast of "Black Mass" includes Joel Edgerton as FBI agent John Connolly, the man who convinces Bulger to become an informant, and Benedict Cumberbatch as William Bulger, Whitey's brother, a longtime Massachusetts State Senator and former President of the University of Massachusetts. The A-list line-up also includes: Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson, Jesse Plemons, Corey Stoll, Rory Cochrane, Sienna Miller and Adam Scott.
