NHL Cancels Preseason, Focused on Not Missing Regular Season Games
Just one day after the National Football League settled its labor disagreements with the referees, the National Hockey League announced has cancelled the remainder of the 2012 preseason schedule.
"The cancellation of the preseason schedule was necessary because of the absence of a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL Players' Association and the NHL," the NHL said.
Negotiations toward establishing a new Collective Bargaining Agreement between the National Hockey League and National Hockey League Players' Association are scheduled to resume Friday in New York and the League and the Union also have blocked out Saturday and Sunday for potential sessions.
"We have agreed on an agenda of topics that we think can lead to productive discussions and agreement, and we hope that it will be constructive to the overall process," Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said. "We're 100 percent focused on not missing any regular-season games and, hopefully, we can achieve that objective."
The NHL locked out the players Sept. 16, following the expiration of the previous CBA.
Opening night for the 2012-13 regular season is scheduled for Oct. 11.
The Islanders-Devils preseason game scheduled for Oct. 2 at Barclays Center has been cancelled.
