Tom Cruise Lawsuit: Movie Star Settles Defamation Suit Against Publisher
Tom Cruise is not shy about filing lawsuits -- or winning them -- and in this latest one, he settled against a tabloid publisher for his claims that he "abandoned" his daughter!
According to CNN, the claim originally came from Bauer Publishing, the company behind InTouch Magazine and Life & Style Magazine. InTouch reported that Tom Cruise "abandoned" his daughter, Suri, during his divorce from her mother, Katie Holmes. The lawsuit against Bauer Publishing, In Touch and Life & Style magazines "has been settled," said Lindsay Ferraro, public relations director for both magazines, in an e-mail. "The terms of the settlement were not disclosed and remain confidential."
Neither Bauer Publishing nor the magazines "intended to communicate that Tom Cruise had cut off all ties and abandoned his daughter, Suri, and regret if anyone drew that inference from anything they published," she added.
A court document noted that the suit was dismissed Friday "with prejudice," meaning that it cannot be refiled.
But according to the Polish website The Nation, Cruise himself has admitted that he has seen less of Suri since he split with Holmes. Although the terms of the settlement were sealed, both sides agreed to pay their own legal fees, according to the TMZ celebrity news website. The couple -- who wed in November 2006 after a whirlwind romance and a proposal beneath the Eiffel Tower in Paris -- struck a divorce settlement within two weeks of Holmes' bombshell announcement. Last month Cruise -- who appeared to have been taken completely by surprise by his wife's announcement -- denied having "abandoned" his daughter, while acknowledging that he has seen less of the seven-year-old.
So... with that said... do you think that the magazine was unfairly treated? Or should people just learn to mind their own business? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
