Miss Universe Paulina Vega Will Not Meet With FARC, Says She Wouldn't Be 'Useful'
Miss Universe 2014, Paulina Vega, has turned down a request from FARC to attend the peace negotiations between the rebel group and the Colombian government in Havana, Cuba, according to Colombia Reports.
The beauty queen, who is currently touring her home country, believes her involvement would not be productive.
"I have not met with the FARC," she said in a press conference in Bogota on Monday.
"If it would have been useful, I would have gone, but if it is just to talk with them for them to tell me how things are going, I don't think that it is relevant," she continued, explaining she will leave negotiations to the government.
"We have taken the most intelligent decision: to leave the matter to the president and the government," Vega explained.
Following her crowning as Miss Universe, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) published an invitation for Vega on their website, inviting her to Havana and witness how the negotiations were going.
"We welcome your willingness to travel to Havana and we invite you to materialize your visit to update you about the development of the peace talks, the progress and the enormous contribution that you and the majorities who desire peace can make," the group wrote.
"Be assured that we are willing to address your concerns and consider your views a valuable contribution to peace; we are waiting for your confirmation and your contribution."
However, according to La Opinion, the beauty queen wants to focus on other issues concerning Colombia, including women's issues and child malnutrition. She also wants to shed more light into the struggle against HIV/AIDS.
FARC and the Colombian government have been conducting peace negotiations since 2012 in an attempt to end the decades-long struggle between the government and rebels.
