Shark Attack 2015: 64-Year-Old Killed By Shark While Snorkeling in Hawaii
A 65-year-old woman died after being attacked by a shark in Hawaii on Wednesday.
Officials say that a female resident of Kihei, who has not been identified, was snorkeling with two friends before they were separated Wednesday morning. That's when she was attacked at a popular surf spot near Big Beach at Makena State Park known as "Dumps" around 9 a.m., according to the Maui Fire Department.
Snorkelers found her unresponsive and lying face down about 200 yards offshore, Maui Fire Department said in a news release.
"The victim reportedly was snorkeling with two other friends and at some point separated from the others," the Fire Department said, reports CNN. "She was alone when she was found."
Although firefighters tried lifesaving efforts, she did not survive.
Medics said that she had suffered severe injuries to her upper torso.
Following the attack, officials in Maui closed several beaches, and sightings in California spurred warnings on popular beaches.
The fatal encounter marks the first attack in Hawaii in 2015, and the third one since 2013.
Ocean safety crews have cleared and closed the waters from Big Beach to La Perouse Bay in south Maui.
"Our condolence goes out to the family of the victim," said Kekoa Kaluhiwa, Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, in a statement, reports KRON.
Earlier this year, a 13-year-old surfing star died in a shark attack off the coast of the Indian Ocean island of Reunion in April.
The tragic incident occurred as Elio Canestri and seven others were surfing off the west coast of the island, a spokesman for the island's rescue services agency told NBC News. That's when a shark tore into the boy's stomach and flung him around in the water just as he was about to mount a wave, the spokesman added.
"A boat was launched very quickly, and the victim was dragged out of the sea, but he died from his wounds," the spokesman said. "Those who witnessed the attack, including other children, are being treated for trauma."
