New England Patriots Alum Aaron Hernandez's Legal Battles Continue
New England Patriot alum, tight-end Aaron Hernandez, is being sued by the family of the man that he is accused of murdering, Odin Lloyd, 27. Meanwhile, the police investigate the death of another person related to the case. The Herald-News stated that the wrongful-death lawsuit was filed on Dec. 16 in Superior Court in New Bedford, Mass.
Hernandez, 24, pled not guilty to the Jun. 17 shooting death of semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd, who was dating the sister of Hernandez's girlfriend. Held without bail, the lawsuit against him alleges that he "maliciously, willfully, wantonly, recklessly or by gross negligence" instigated Lloyd's personally injuries, which directly lead to his death.
Kevin J. Phelan, the Lloyd's family, helped to forge the lawsuit which will probably exceed the value of Hernandez's $1.25 million home and the $5 million real estate attachment, and they've filed a lawsuit to halt the Patriots' $3 million dollar payment to Hernandez for money he's apparently owed. Restraining orders to preserve Hernandez's assets was upheld during a hearing that was scheduled last Thursday. The team stated that they will not pay if Hernandez prevails in a grievance filed by the NFL Players Association; and lawyer for Hernandez's estate agreed to cease formal restraining order against the team, and will drop the Patriots as defendants.
Alexander Bradley, a friend of Hernandez, is also suing the former tight-end because Hernandez allegedly shot Bradley in the face after the two argued outside of a Miami club at the beginning of the year. Hernandez has chosen to plead the Fifth Amendment, so that he does not have to self-incriminate.
