A Queens judge arraigned and ordered a man to be held without bail on Sunday for allegedly shooting an NYPD officer in the head Saturday evening.

The shooting suspect, 35-year-old Demetrius Blackwell, was charged with assault, weapon possession and two counts of attempted murder for shooting NYPD Officer Brian Moore, reports CBS New York. He did not enter a plea during his brief appearance at the Queens Criminal Court.

Officials say the shooting occurred when Officer Moore and his partner, Erik Jansen, were sitting in an unmarked patrol car in Queens Village and spotted Blackwell adjusting his waistband. The cops, who were wearing plain clothes, asked what he was carrying. That is when Blackwell opened fire, shooting Moore in the head at around 6:15 p.m.

Officer Moore "was gunned down by a miscreant who prides himself being called 'Hellraiser,'" said Patrick Lynch, president of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, at a news conference. "Well, as this judge just put him behind bars, he can raise hell at Rikers Island. We'll make sure he never raises hell on the streets of New York City ever again," Lynch added.

Blackwell's court-appointed lawyer, on the other hand, said his client was arrested without a warrant, adding that "the arrest may be illegal."

Meanwhile, Moore has been listed in critical but stable condition at Jamaica Hospital on Sunday. According to court papers, he endured hours of surgery for "severe injuries to his skull and brain" and has been put in a medically induced coma.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown told The Associated Press the 25-year-old cop "is fighting for his life."

State corrections records show that Blackwell was convicted in 2001 on an attempted murder charge. After serving five years behind bars, he returned to prison for violating parole in 2007. He was released in 2008, and was also arrested in 2013 for assaulting a NYPD officer.
