NYPD Officer Killed: Police Officer Brian Moore Dies After Being Shot in the Face
The 25-year-old NYPD cop who was shot in the face Saturday evening while on duty in Queens, New York, has died.
NYPD Commissioner William Bratton confirmed that Officer Brian Moore has loss the battle for his life after suffering from "severe injuries to his skull and brain" and being put in a medically induced coma.
Officials say the shooting occurred when Moore and his partner, Erik Jansen, were sitting in an unmarked patrol car in Queens Village and spotted Demetrius Blackwell, 35, adjusting his waistband. The cops, who were wearing plain clothes at the time, asked him what he was carrying. That is when Blackwell allegedly opened fire, shooting Moore in the head around 6:15 p.m.
Moore was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Monday.
"I did not know this officer in person in life; I've only come to know him in death," Bratton told reporters outside the hospital, according to the New York Times.
Bratton also described Moore as "an extraordinary young man" and said his death was "a great loss to this profession and to this city."
"He'd already received two exceptional police service medals and two meritorious police service medals," said the commissioner, reports ABC News.
Blackwell appeared in court on Sunday and is facing charges of first-degree murder and weapon possession. He was ordered to be held without bail on Sunday. He did not enter a plea during his arraignment.
Officer Moore "was gunned down by a miscreant who prides himself being called 'Hellraiser,'" said Patrick Lynch, president of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, at a news conference, reports CBS New York. "Well, as this judge just put him behind bars, he can raise hell at Rikers Island. We'll make sure he never raises hell on the streets of New York City ever again," Lynch added.
State corrections records show that Blackwell was convicted in 2001 on an attempted murder charge. After serving five years behind bars, he returned to prison for violating parole in 2007. He was released in 2008, and was also arrested in 2013 for assaulting a NYPD officer.
