New Apple TV Upgrade: New Model Will Feature Touchpad Remote and New Streaming Service
For nearly eight years, since the Apple TV was introduced in 2007, the remote has remained mostly unchanged. It started out with the same philosophy Apple founder Steve Jobs created many years before for all Apple products: simplicity.
According to a report on The New York Times, Apple will be launching a new Apple TV this summer and, with it, a redesigned remote.
Until now, the Apple TV remote has had one of the most simplistic designs on the market, with only three buttons to control everything on the set top Internet streaming box. It is basically just a thin piece of metal with a sleek design that gives it a futuristic look.
But after eight years, the design is going to get one more slight modification to keep up with the times. It will now feature a touchpad for scrolling around on the screen. It will be accompanied by two physical buttons and the design will be a little thicker than the current version.
The thickness of the remote will be comparable to the current version of the Amazon Echo's remote, which is much thicker than the Apple TV remote.
For those of you who have been paying huge cable bills over the years and feel cheated because you do not use all the channels on your bundle, you will now have a reason to rejoice. According to the NYT article and The Wall Street Journal, as reported by Business Insider, we can expect to see these channels in smaller bundles offered on the Apple TV now.
This new Internet streaming package will be a step away from linear television. Many popular channels will be expected to sign on to this package, which include ABC and Fox. The package is expected to offer around 25 channels and you can expect to pay around $30 to $40 a month.
This means Apple is taking a cue from Netflix, which is a video streaming buffet as opposed to a pay-per-view streaming service. Event though Netflix does not always have the newest and hottest movies on the market, they offer a free-for-all viewing service for a low price. Convenient binge watching seems to be what consumers want the most.
Apple's current model does have an excellent selection from the iTunes platform, but they also charge you each time you rent or buy a movie, which means the bills add up quickly.
