For those who thought Sadie Saxton was the original mean girl on "Awkward," that just means she has not been schooled yet by the original survivor of the 2004 "Mean Girls" film.

According to MTV, Jonathan Bennett will be joining the cast of "Awkward" in a mid-season arc that will find him as a potentially new love interest for Jenna (Ashley Rickards). His character in "Mean Girls" played an on-again, off-again love interest for the head of the "plastics," Regina (Rachel McAdams), whom Cady (Lindsay Lohan) was secretly in love with.

This could make for an interesting refresher course in regards to the characters he plays, given that he is sometimes portrayed more as an innocent victim torn between the wars girls have with each other, as opposed to the knight in shining armor who comes to their rescue.

But you can rest assured this arc will not affect the lives of your favorite "Awkward" characters until the second half of the season, when the crew comes back from their first year of college for the summer. The first half of the season is devoted to the last few weeks of their senior year, including prom, graduation, and saying goodbye.

In the second half of the season, post-freshman year of college, old friends will spend a lot of their time catching up. It will be the typical first year back from college, with characters likely relaxing and probably doing a little partying. But Bennett will be the fresh new face in town, Ethan, who is a highly articulate wordsmith in his late '20s.

Jenna will meet Ethan while working a summer job and at first, there will be a rivalry between the two. However, as we have all seen in the past, rivalries that lead to romance can be quite engaging.

Also, though it has been widely reported that this will be the show's last season, co-executive producer Mike Chessler made a few comments to TV Guide that challenges that notion.

"It might not be the series finale," Chessler told TV Guide. "We might continue, so we'll see what makes sense in terms of the degree of wrapping up this chapter."

"Awkward" returns to MTV on Aug. 31.
