'Star Wars Episode 7' Rumors, Spoilers & Cast: Will Lupita Nyong'o Play CGI Character?
It has not been a secret that Mexican-born actress Lupita Nyong'o would be starring the upcoming "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens," but there was always some questioning about what she would do in the upcoming film by J.J. Abrams.
Over the last few days, fans have been given more and more information on the hotly anticipated film in the major franchise and now we all know something certain: Nyong'o will not be playing a Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) creation.
A recent piece in Vanity Fair revealed that the Oscar-winning actress will take on the role of Maz Kanata. She is apparently a pirate, but her role and function is not completely clear in the context of the story. Reports from Indie Revolver note that Kanata was already revealed briefly in the trailer during a scene in which she hands over Luke's lightsaber to an unknown character. This has added to speculations that she might be Luke's apprentice. If this is the case, then she would understand the important of the lightsaber and why Rey and Finn are after it.
There are some that have complained that they would have liked to see a puppet version of the character instead of CGI, but this move seems to validate the idea that despite the film's continuous attempts to emphasize practical effects, the modern film world is one in which CGI is at the forefront of digital technology.
The film will be released on Dec. 18, and Disney and Lucasfilm are starting to pick up the momentum on the marketing campaign. Photographs from the set have already been released on a continual basis over the last few days, and it is likely that fans get at least one, if not two trailers prior to the big debut.
The film also stars Oscar Isaac, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Max Von Sydow, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher.
