George Zimmerman -- the Florida man who was acquitted in the 2012 shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin -- was shot in the face on Monday.

Florida police say that Zimmerman was shot and wounded in Lake Mary around 12:45 p.m., CNN affiliate WESH-TV reported.

The shooting, which involved another man, took place on Lake Mary Boulevard near Rinehart Road, east of Interstate 4, reports WKMG Local 6.

Although the shooting is still being investigated, police spokeswoman Bianca Gillett told CNN that the road rage appears to have been a factor in the incident.

Following the shooting, Lake Mary Police Chief Steve Bracknell said that the shooting may have been related to an "ongoing dispute" involving Zimmerman and another person. He also said that Zimmerman reportedly suffered from a minor gunshot wound.

According to witnesses at the scene, Zimmerman was able to walk into an ambulance without assistance.

"He walked normally into the ambulance, so he wasn't being helped or nothing," said witness Ricardo Berrare. "They actually backed up the ambulance next to his driver side so he could walk into the door."

Berrare added that a bullet hole appears to have shattered a window in the car Zimmerman was in.

"The officer was talking to him through the back window because the other one had a hole in it. It was all shattered," he said.

Police reported no fatalities in the shooting.

Zimmerman was acquitted in 2013 in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed African-American teenager who was killed after Zimmerman suspected that he was a burglar when he was walking through a gated community in Sanford, Florida. Once Zimmerman confronted the boy, the two engaged in some type of confrontation. Zimmerman then opened fire, arguing that it was in self-defense.

Since his high-profile trial and acquittal, Zimmerman has had several other encounters with law enforcement officials in Florida. In September 2013, Zimmerman's ex-wife, Shellie Zimmerman, called authorities to report he had punched her father and was using a gun to threaten her. However, she declined to press charges.

Two months later, Zimmerman was arrested and accused of domestic violence by girlfriend Samantha Scheibe, who also dropped charges.

In September 2014, a driver reported that he was in fear of his safety after Zimmerman had an outburst of road rage. The man, who was not identified, told Lake Mary police that Zimmerman pulled up next to him in a truck and yelled, "Why are you pointing a finger at me?" WKMG-TV reports.
