It seems fans of Keifer Sutherland's fictional Jack Bauer could soon see his popular show, "24," back on the small screen. Fox recently revealed that a new season is in the works for the political serial drama thriller.

The announcement was made during the Fox conference call, where the network's executives sat to discuss their TV schedule for fall 2015. CEOs for 20th Century Fox TX Dana Walden and Gary Newman revealed the project.

"We have been developing another version of '24,' but it's still fairly early in the development process," Newman said.

The network chief added that since it's still within the early stages, no further details could be revealed.

"So there just would be nothing we can tell you at this time other than we are working on something," continued Newman.

The announcement, though vague, is confirmation that the TV action thriller is set to return.

No word has been made on whether or not the new series would follow the 24-episode format of the first eight seasons, or if it would have a shortened 12-episode series similar to the show's Season 9, titled "4: Live Another Day."

Rumors of a new "24" series began to surface in January 2015. At that time, Entertainment Weekly reported that the networks executives were thinking of reviving the famous TV drama thriller which could be aired beginning 2016.

However, the site noted that while the new series is moving forward, Sutherland might not return.

Walden said that they have discussed the project with the actor.

"We talk to Kiefer all the time. He's a great creative partner, potentially he won't be in this installment. We're not sure yet. We're not that far along, but I know he supports us doing more '24,'" said the executive.

The CEO clarified, "First of all, we're not talking about continuing the show without him. We're talking about whether there's one installment that he's not in."

It was also revealed that the pitch for the new show actually involved a way for Sutherland's character to return should he choose to do so.

The 48-year-old actor previously expressed his reluctance to return to the series and considered Season 9 as the "closure for the character he's portrayed since 2001."

While no release date has been set, speculation surfaced that the show could potentially hit TV screens as early as May 2016. BGR reported that the probable schedule was based on the timeline of "24: Live Another Day." The show was announced in May 2013. The episodes were then written by July of the same year, and shooting began by January 2014.
