The victim's cousin said that he and Hayes were talking about hunting and drinking beer when he decided to show the teen a new a 12-gauge shotgun, reports Cleveland Scene. However, the gun discharged after he pointed it towards Hayes and pulled the trigger, said Chief Bishop. He told police he didn't think it was loaded. The shooter is now cooperating with police.

The Tribune Chronicle reported that Hayes was rushed to Cleveland's MetroHealth hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Once officials get the results from the boy's autopsy, gunshot residue test and a toxicology report, it will be determined what charges, if any, should be filed in the case, said Bishop.

After he was pronounced brain dead on Monday afternoon, a women identifying as the victim's relative thanked everybody for their prayers in a Facebook post.

"I will never understand why this happened to my baby and I pray that justice for Jessie is done!" she wrote.

In the meantime, Hayes' family member started a GoFundMe page in order to raise $10,000 to cover the costs of his funeral.

"The family has no financial ability to pay for medical expenses or the funeral arrangements. Please help make this awful tragedy a little easier for the family in their time of need," wrote a relative on the crowdfunding website.

So far, they have managed to raise more than $3,500.
