Ava DuVernay is rumored to direct with "Black Panther."

While it has not been confirmed, the Wrap is reporting that the award-winning director may be directing the Phase Three superhero movie scheduled for 2018.

According to the source, Marvel studios is looking for a director of color to direct the film, which will star Chadwick Boseman ("42," "Get On Up").

If DuVernay confirms, the assignment will be the first film in the Marvel franchise directed by a woman. Patty Jenkins was previously in talks for "Thor: The Dark World" before she left. Jenkins is now set to direct DC Comics' "Wonder Woman" film. Marvel is also seeking a female director for "Captain Marvel," which will be the first Marvel film with a female superhero as its protagonist.

DuVernay is best known for last year's historical drama "Selma," which was nominated for two Academy Awards including Best Picture and won Best Song. She is also known for directing the independent features "I Will Follow" (2012) and the critically acclaimed "Middle of Nowhere" (2012). Her second feature went on to win the Best Director award at the Sundance Film Festival.

Black Panther is set to make his debut in "Captain America: Civil War." After that, the character will appear in the standalone film, which tells the story of T'Challa, Prince of Wakanda, who must rise to take the mantle of the Black Panther after his father, the king, is treacherously killed. The script for the film is currently being written by Mark Bailey, who is best known for his work on "Last Days in Vietnam."

Marvel will begin its third phase of Avengers film with "Captain America: Civil War" and will be followed by "Thor: Ragnarok." It will also be followed by "Doctor Strange" and "Guardians of the Galaxy 2."

"Black Panther" is set to be released on July 6, 2018.
