LG Watch Urbane Specs, Price & Features: Third Generation LG Smartwatch Costs as Much as Apple Watch Sport
LG's Watch Urbane is the latest smartwatch trying to compete with the hot new Apple Watch. The Watch Urbane has the same price as the entry-level Apple Watch Sport of $349, according to CNet.
This is LG's third smartwatch. Smartwatches from Google's Android Wear have been out for more than a year. LG started with a square watch when it launched the G Watch. Then, it went to the G Watch R, which was round and looked more like a regular watch. The Watch Urbane keeps the G Watch R's design.
LG added some chrome, making it look a little classier. The Watch Urbane will take advantage of the updates to the Android Wear software.
The latest offering increased in weight from the G Watch R, but has an excellent and clear 1.3-inch OLED display.
A single button can be found on the right side of the Watch Urbane. This button acts as the home button for Android Wear. It can be used to activate the screen with one click. Once activated, the button can be pressed again to activate Google Now voice commands. Hold down the button and apps and settings can be reached.
The Watch Urbane has a microphone and vibration alerts, but it does not have a speaker.
At 11mm thick, the Watch Urbane has a similar thickness to the Apple Watch, but it is wider and larger. Men might appreciate the way the watch fits their wrists, but women might not.
Unlike the Apple Watch, the Watch Urbane offers some water resistance. However, it can only withstand about 30 minutes of submersion in shallow water (1 meter or less). Users will be able to wash their hands with it, but showering is not recommended.
Watch Urbane users will be able to draw emojis right onto the screen and Android Wear will do its best to match the correct emoji. There is also an emoji-helper to train users to draw them.
According to USA Today, a simple wrist flick up or down can display the next or previous card of information on the display.
The Watch Urbane is always on, meaning users will always be able to see the time of day. The Apple Watch only turns on when the watch is raised up towards a user's face or a button is pressed.
The battery life on the Watch Urbane will last longer than a day. Turning off the always-on mode will extend the battery life to about two days.
Google's upcoming I/O conference will likely introduce a new update to the Android Wear software.
The Apple Watch does offer once distinct advantage over the Watch Urbane: calls right from the watch. The Watch Urbane can still dial phone calls but the actual calling and listening of the call will be performed through a connected Android phone.
