Arsenal Transfer Rumors: Would Chelsea Allow Petr Cech to Become Gunners' Number 1?
Arsenal has been rumored to be looking for a new netminder to take over next season and all indications point to the club having interest in one Petr Cech.
There is no secret about the Czech keeper being unhappy with his situation in Chelsea. After years of service as the team's number one he was relegated to the bench behind Thibaut Courtois. Cech is still 32 and by all indications still a world class keeper with much to offer, so it is no surprise that he is interested in looking at a contender with a need for a number one guy.
But this rumor comes with a wrinkle as no one can overlook the fact that Chelsea and Arsenal are major rivals and the likelihood of the Blues selling off their legendary keeper to their biggest enemy is unthinkable.
On the other side of the equation, Arsenal's insistence on bringing in a new number one keeper is rather shocking. The team has moved on from Polish netminder Wojciech Szczesny, but David Ospina has put in a tremendous shift as the de-facto starter and should get more opportunities to lead the club next season.
Of course Cech is a more appetizing proposition if he is available. He has more experience in the Premier League, is far more capable physically (he is over 6'5" while Ospina is only 6' tall) and comes with a bigger pedigree for those in the marketing department. And his track record speaks for itself. Is Ospina an elite keeper? Not yet. But Cech is and has been for most of his career.
Who knows where this saga ends for Arsenal. The team has shown tremendous improvement and maturity throughout the season and it is true that having two dependable goalkeepers is huge for the team's long-term future and success.
But, a lot of that will depend on what Chelsea ultimately has to say.
