Annual Gallup Poll Shows Obama is Most Admired Man, Clinton Most Admired Woman Worldwide
Gallup polls Americans each year to measure public admiration of noteworthy individuals worldwide. This year President Barack Obama took first place in the men's category, while former first lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton came in at the top spot for females, both of them winning by landslides.
In terms of numbers, 16 percent of those polled mentioned Obama as the most admired man. Obama has taken the number one spot in the Gallup poll every year since he was elected president in 2008.
"However, similar to his declining job approval rating this year, the percentage naming him fell to 16 percent from 30 percent in 2012," said Gallup's Jeffrey Jones.
Although his percentage rating may have slipped, Obama still beat out the other honorable male mentions by a large margin. In second place was George W. Bush who received four percent of the vote, followed by Pope Francis, also at four percent and Bill Clinton at two percent.
Gallup's top ten most admired men of 2013 included a host of political figures. Among them, Obama, Bush, Clinton, former Texas congressman Ron Paul, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, 2012 presidential candidate Mitt Romney and former president Jimmy Carter. Other famous names that made the list include Rev. Billy Graham, Bill Gates and Clint Eastwood.
For the female category, Clinton took 15 percent of the vote as the most admired woman of 2013. Clinton beat out Oprah Winfrey who had six percent of the vote, as well as first lady Michelle Obama and Sarah Palin, each with five percent.
According to Gallup, Clinton has been named the most admired woman 18 times, including each of the past 12 years. This is more than any other woman in the history of the poll. Clinton garnered her first win as first lady in 1993 and has continually ranked at the top or near the top of the list ever since.
However, as was the case with Obama, Clinton's percentage point was down this year in comparison to last year when she had 21 percent of the vote. This year's score marks her lowest figure since 2006.
The top 10 most admired woman list includes political figures like Clinton, Palin, former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. It also includes famous humanitarians like Winfrey and Angelina Jolie. All of the women ranking in this year's top ten have appeared previously as well.
The Gallup poll was conducted by telephone between Dec. 5 and Dec. 8. Respondents include a random sample of 1,031 adults nationwide.
