Diego Luna has joined the new spinoff "Star Wars: Rogue One."

Luna will play a rebel fighter for director Gareth Edwards' new film. Variety reported the casting news and the actor will join Felicity Jones, who was first cast in the film. Riz Ahmed and Ben Mendelsohn, who is set to star as the film's primary villain, will also be in the film.

The new film revolves around the heist of the Death Star plans by a group of rebel fighters, with Jones starring as one of the rebel soldiers. The plot was revealed by Edwards at a recent panel at the Star Wars Celebration convention in Anaheim.

While it is not confirmed sources say that Ahmed and Luna will play rebel fighters alongside Jones. The film is set to take place between Episode III and Episode IV, but closer chronologically to "A New Hope."

The new film is part of Disney and Lucasfilm's initiatives to make more Star Wars films and create films for a new generation. The franchise will continue in December when Disney unveils "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens."

Luna has become one of the most prominent Latino actors in the industry. He is also one of the few Latino actors to join a Star Wars film. Other Latino actors include Oscar Isaac, Jimmy Smits and Lupita Nyong'o.

Luna has been seen in many films including his breakout performance in "Y Tu Mama Tambien" as well as "Milk," "Elysium," "Casa de Mi Padre" and "Rudo y Cursi."
