Android 5.1 Lollipop Update Release Date: Samsung Galaxy S6, GS6 Edge OTA Rollout Coming June, According to Canadian Carrier Rogers
Could the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge get an Android 5.1 Lollipop OTA update rollout this June? One carrier outside of the U.S. claims it's happening.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 and its cousin, the Galaxy S6 Edge, have a lot going for it right out of the box. But it also brings an overly aggressive RAM management bug that causes a memory leak issue. That problem may be patched by the end of June, the purported (and nebulous) release date for the device's Android 5.1 Lollipop OTA rollout -- if GS6 owners are lucky and Canadian carrier Rogers is right.
Rogers, a top Canadian carrier, recently posted an update to its community forums (via Phandroid), where it slated the release date for Android 5.1 Lollipop for the brand-new Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge devices for this June.
Of course, Rogers hedged its bets at the bottom of the release date schedule with the note, "Sometimes, things change beyond our control so all dates listed are subject to change." Adding another grain of salt, of course, is Rogers' country of operation.
Being a Canadian carrier, there's no guarantee that when our Samsung Galaxy S6-carrying neighbors to the north get Lollipop 5.1, so will Samsung GS6 and GS6 Edge owners in the U.S.
But it's the closest thing to an official release date so far, and coming from a major carrier in a country close to the U.S. (geographically and from a market perspective) it is definitely more than nothing.
Whether the Android 5.1 Lollipop update fixes the Galaxy S6's particular memory leak problem is yet to be known, but hopefully it won't cause more problems, which some Nexus users have experienced with the update. We'll keep you posted as we get closer to this possible release window.
