Boxing News 2015: Gennady Golovkin Wants To Face Miguel Cotto, Canelo Alvarez, Floyd Mayweather
Gennady Golovkin moved one step closer to getting a big-money fight after scoring an impressive victory against Willie Monroe Jr. on Saturday night at the Forum in Inglewood, California.
After scoring a sixth-round knockout win against Monroe, Golovkin declared that he is ready to face Miguel Cotto, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and even Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Golovkin, who improved his record to 33-0 with 30 knockout victories, is the mandatory challenger to Cotto, who is the reigning World Boxing Council middleweight champion. The 32-year-old Kazakh said he respects Cotto, but he will wait for the Puerto Rican to give him his title shot if the world champion wins against Daniel Geale next month.
"I respect Miguel Cotto. Miguel is a great champion," Golovkin said after the fight via ESPN. "After this fight, I don't know who wins, but I stay here and wait for my big fight."
Golovkin will have to wait a little bit longer, though, as Cotto is reportedly scheduled to face Alvarez in September if he wins against Geale in their title fight on June 6 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
The winner of the rumored bout between Alvarez and Cotto will have to face Golovkin with the WBC middleweight title at stake. When asked about facing Alvarez, Golovkin said he also feels now is the right time to face the Mexican boxing superstar.
"Canelo? Not the future," Golovkin said. "Right now I am ready for the big fights. Miguel and Canelo. Right now. Not in the future. I am ready for the big fights right now. The next show."
Golovkin, who has won by stoppage in his last 20 fights, also admitted that a fight against Mayweather is his dream bout. Weight could be an issue because Mayweather is comfortable fighting at 147 pounds. But to make the fight happen, Golovkin said that he is willing to go down to 154 pounds.
Golovkin's trainer -- Abel Sanchez -- clarified, though, that they will only move down to the junior middleweight division for Mayweather. Alvarez recently said that he will stay at 154, which could be stumbling block for the possible fight between Canelo and Golovkin later this year.
"We're not doing a catch-weight. It's a 160-pound title," Sanchez said of Golovkin facing Alvarez. "If he chooses to give it up, then we'll fight someone else for the title. We're not going down to 154 for Canelo."
