‘Wayward Pines’ Season 1 Episode 2 Spoilers: Ethan and Beverly Attempt Escape in ‘Do Not Discuss Your Life Before’ [Watch]
In the "Wayward Pines" premiere, "Where Paradise is Home," viewers met Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke who drove to the mountainous Idaho town in search of two fellow agents who visited the place and vanished.
Ethan suffered a terrible car accident. He regained consciousness surrounded by mountains and tall fir trees, unable to remember how he arrived there. Injured and dazed, he wandered into a coffee shop to ask where he was, then collapsed on the floor. Later, he woke up in a hospital under the care of psychiatrist Dr. Jenkins and his creepy nurse, Pam. Unnerved by their strange behavior, he got out of the hospital as quickly as possible.
Once out of the hospital, Ethan met Beverly, a bartender. He told her about the search for the two missing agents. She gave him a note that contained an address and a warning that the town had no crickets. Outside, Ethan heard crickets, and he discovered the noise was coming from a speaker box.
He visited the address and found the rotting corpse of Agent Bill Evans. He reported the finding to Sheriff Pope, who was careless. We don't know if the sheriff is a misunderstood lawman or a villain. We do know he likes rum raisin ice cream.
Ethan returned to the bar looking for Beverly, but she could not be found. No one knew anyone by her name.
Agitated, Ethan made a scene and was knocked out. He woke up back at the hospital where Dr. Jenkins wanted to perform surgery to help his condition. Nurse Pam gave him a sedative and wheeled him down the hall. Beverly intervened and helped Ethan escape.
Later, in Seattle, Dr. Jenkins met with Ethan's superior, who wanted to "call it off." Ethan's wife, Theresa, also in Seattle, wondered if her husband ran off with woman he's had an affair with.
Meanwhile, Ethan found lost agent Kate Hewson, who is also his former lover. Kate has adapted quite well to life in Wayward Pines. She claimed to have lived there for 12 years, which contradicts reality. She remembered her past with Ethan and the agency, yet cooperates with her trapped existence in the creepy town. She is married to Harold Ballinger, a local toy maker.
Kate told Ethan "they" are always listening. She suggested that he would be happy there.
The episode ended with Ethan stealing a car to leave town, only to drive through it many times. Frustrated, he ditched the car to walk on foot. He walked up to an electric fence blocking all ways out. An intimidating sign read "Return to Wayward Pines. Beyond this point you will die." Sheriff Pope had followed him to the border.
"How do I get out of town?" Ethan asked.
"You don't," the sheriff said.
In Episode 2, "Do Not Discuss Your Life Before," Sheriff Pope refuses Ethan's offer of help in investigating Agent Bill Evan's death. Ethan trusts Beverly, and the two strengthen their bond. They plot to escape.
Ethan's wife, Theresa, and son, Ben, leave Seattle to search for Ethan in Idaho.
Kate invites Ethan and Beverly to dinner. Her motive for doing so is sketchy.
"You think they will run?" Kate's husband asked in the video clip.
"Absolutely," she said.
When Ethan and Beverly attempt escape, phones in every house start ringing. According to executive producer and show writer Chad Hodge, something "shocking and huge" will happen that changes everything.
We don't yet know why the townspeople are trapped, or what persuades them to cooperate with the mandatory rules.
What do you think is behind the residents' conformity? Why is everyone tormenting Ethan? Is he being punished? Is he part of some strange experiment? Is his search for missing fellow agents a ruse? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments section below.
