Salmonella Recall: The Cultured Kitchen Cashew Cheese Dips
A California maker of non-dairy cashew cheese dips is voluntarily recalling all flavors of its line due to Salmonella risk.
The Cultured Kitchen food company, based in West Sacramento, Calif., has agreed to pull all of its cashew cheese products off shelves after a possible link was found between the foods and a particular strain of Salmonella found mostly in Southeast Asia, where the operation's cashews originate .
According to a press release issued by the federal Food and Drug Administration, the Cultured Kitchen cheese affected by the recall was distributed in Northern California and Nevada at various natural foods stores and farmers markets in the Sacramento Valley, San Francisco Bay Area and Reno.
The recalled cheese products are:
The Cultured Kitchen Herb, 8 oz., UPC Code 794504922714, all exp. dates up to April 19, 2014;
The Cultured Kitchen Smoked Cheddar. 8 oz., UPC Code 736211709134, all exp. dates up to April 19, 2014;
The Cultured Kitchen Pepper Jack, 8 oz., UPC Code 794504922615, all exp. dates up to April 19, 2014;
The Cultured Kitchen Habanero Lime, 8 oz., UPC Code 794504922813, all exp. dates up to April 19, 2014;
The Cultured Kitchen Pesto or Basil Pesto, 8 oz., UPC Code 794504851120, all exp. dates up to April 19, 2014;
The Cultured Kitchen White Cheddar, 8 oz., UPC Code 794504924015, all exp. dates up to April 19, 2014.
The recall was called soon after it was discovered raw materials used in the production of the cashew cheese products may have been tainted with Salmonella.
Salmonella infection symptoms include fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea, which may in some cases be bloody. Most people showing symptoms of Salmonella recover within a week, however, some may develop complications that require hospitalization.
Small children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are at highest risk for more severe illness.
People who develop symptoms of Salmonella after consuming the Cultured Kitchen's cashew cheese are advised to consult their health care providers.
