Immigration Reform News: Gov. Chris Christie Calls Pathway to Citizenship 'Extreme' Idea [Video]
Despite supporting a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants a few years ago, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has flip-flopped on the issue, declaring he now stands against the idea of giving undocumented immigrants a path to legal status.
During an interview Monday with Fox News host Megyn Kelly, the Republican governor said that although the U.S. immigration system needs to be reformed, he does not agree with allowing undocumented immigrants to live in the United States permanently. Instead, he said even the idea of a pathway to citizenship is "extreme."
"I think that's an extreme way to go," said the potential 2016 presidential candidate on "The Kelly File." "I don't believe that's the way to go and I don't believe that's where the American people are," he added.
In response, Kelly pointed out that Christie supported the idea back in 2010 when he said the president and Congress "have to secure our borders, and they have to put forward a commonsense path to citizenship for people" during an interview on ABC's "This Week."
After acknowledging his change of heart, he explained he has since evolved on the issue.
"Back in 2010, I was in my first couple of months as governor, I've now learned some of the ramifications of some of these things and what I am saying now is we've got to come up with a solution for it," he said. "I've learned over time about this issue and done a lot more work on it.
He also criticized Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton for "pandering" for Latino votes by backing a pathway to citizenship.
"Just immediately going to a path to citizenship -- as Hilary Clinton is proposing to do -- is just pandering politics, it's not based upon an educated study of an issue," the New Jersey Republican said.
Furthermore, he declared, if he is elected to the White House, he would reverse President Obama's executive actions protecting up to 5 million undocumented residents from deportation.
