'Fear the Walking Dead' Spoilers & News: Showrunner Says Show Won't Go 'Full-Zombie'
Fans of AMC’s zombie apocalypse series “The Walking Dead,” which starts its Season 6 in October, may have been comforted by the knowledge that a spin-off series, “Fear the Walking Dead,” was starting up in the summer.
But according to executive producer of the show Robert Kirkman, those fans had better steel themselves for what promises to be a very different kind of zombie show.
“Fear the Walking Dead,” which focuses on the characters of two recently divorced school teachers who are planning on getting married and bringing their families together when all hell breaks loose, will spotlight on the heart rather than the horrific, and it all sound like a stylish version of “The Brady Bunch” meets “28 Days Later.”
“All the intricacies and struggles that come from that family dynamic, and setting it against the fall of civilization in the face of the zombie apocalypse, just makes things that much more interesting,” Kirkman explained in an interview in Vulture.
And though the show will steady toward more of a family dynamic, there will still be plenty of action on screen for the cravers of catastrophe out there. “Having the show set in Los Angeles, there’s probably going to be more chaos, especially in the first season and moving into our second season, just because we are watching civilization crumble,” says Kirkman.
Showrunner Dave Erickson recently spoke to TVLine about what fans could and could not hope for in the series, saying that the show would be all about a lot of anticipation would not actually go “full-zombie.”
Even though the upcoming series is viewed in some ways as kind of a prequel, viewers should not be expecting a lot of new info on the virus that turns people into zombies as all that is offered will come “through the filter of this highly dysfunctional blended family.”
“It’s about the shark you don’t see,” Erickson said.
