Bill Murray and Netflix Team Up For a Christmas Special
When it comes to holiday specials, Bill Murray is more used to the film stage than a streaming platform. But that is exactly what he is going to do for a Christmas special he has planned for Netflix, which is expected to drop in December, according to Digital Trends.
The "Ghostbusters" star and "Saturday Night" alum has been a comedy legend now for decades. He has done the holiday movies "Scrooged" and "Groundhog Day" as well as many comedy hits, which include "Caddyshack," "Stripes," "What About Bob" and "Lost in Translation."
Sofia Coppola directed him in "Lost in Translation" and she has also written the script for this upcoming comedy special along with Mitch Glazer ("Scrooged"). Coppola will also direct the Netflix exclusive.
In a press release, Coppola described the special as "an homage to the classic variety show featuring Bill Murray playing himself, as he worries no one will show up to his TV show due to a terrible snow storm in New York City."
This lends more credence to the vague trailer that was released for the upcoming show. See it here.
Murray, who will be playing himself seemingly alone for Christmas, will also be accompanied in the show by a list of celebrities including George Clooney, Paul Shaffer, Amy Poehler, Julie White, Dimitri Dimitrov, Michael Cera, Chris Rock, David Johansen, Maya Rudolph, Jason Schwartzman, Jenny Lewis, Phoenix, Frederic Moulin, Rashida Jones and Miley Cyrus.
In an interview with Variety last year, Murray talked about the upcoming special.
"We're going to do it like a little movie," Murray told Variety. "It won't have a format, but it's going to have music. It will have texture. It will have threads through it that are writing. There will be prose."
Murray recently starred in the Weinstein Company's "St. Vincent." The comedic hit has drawn critical praise from critics, despite not becoming a huge box-office draw.
