‘Outlander’ Season 1 Finale Spoilers: Jamie Freed, But His Mind is Now His Prison
According to a promo on Spoilers Guide, in Episode 16 of "Outlander," "To Ransom a Man's Soul," which airs on Starz on May 30 at 9 p.m. EDT, Jamie's freedom comes a bit too late. The darkness in his mind following his sexual submission to Black Jack Randall, in exchange for Claire's life, has forced him into levels of stress that his mind cannot reconcile with.
The last episode, which was titled "Wentworth Prison," found Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) in a precarious and perilous situation as his desperate wife had run a fool's errand in an attempt to break him out of Wentworth and save him. But the plan backfired on her and she was captured by Randall.
But that only happened after Randall had smashed Jamie's hand and tortured him. But he would not rape Jamie without his submission. Randall's only form of torture involved breaking the mind as well as the body.
This week though, the rescue will come a little too late. Randall had more than enough time to break Jamie's spirit and force his mind into utter insanity following the stress of his torture. Randall's successful mental breakthrough has pushed Jamie to an abstract breaking point, one which he may not be able to return.
So breaking Jamie out of prison may turn out to be the easy part. But breaking him out of his mind, that can be a little trickier. The promo suggests that in order to save Jamie from himself, someone will have enter the darkness with him, suggesting that this could be accomplished as a mental companion to the torture.
In an article on Zap2it, showrunner Ron Moore spoke with them about how the show will end up..
"When all is said and done and it's put together, it's a harrowing journey, but it's also -- satisfying is a weird word to use, but it is a satisfying story and I think it's shocking in a good way," Moore told Zap2it. "I'm very proud of where the show finally ends up."
