The creators of "Once Upon a Time" have decided to expand Red Riding Hood's story by releasing an upcoming novel about her life as a child. The novel is titled "Red's Untold Tale" and it is written by Wendy Toliver, the Hollywood Reporter reports.

It explores Red's life at the age of 16, and the obstacles she has faced to become the Red that is featured in the ABC series.

The producers of "Once Upon a Time" released a statement via THR about the upcoming novel that reads, "Plagued by nightmares she doesn't understand and a temper she can't control, 16-year-old Red struggles to save Granny's troubled business and to nurture her budding romance with Peter, even as the betrayal of her classmates awakens the wolf within."

CarterMatt reports that Red, who is played by Meghan Ory on the show, was a prominent character in the first two seasons of "Once Upon a Time." However, when Ory decided to star in CBS' "Intelligence," Red's presence on the show quickly dwindled.

With the release of this upcoming novel, "Once Upon a Time" producers hope to bring back new life into the Red character and provide fans with more knowledge on who she is and what sparked some of her motives.

THR says that "Red's Untold Tale" is the latest novel to join "Once Upon a Time's" ever-growing collection of books and graphic novels.

"Reawakened: A Once Upon a Time Tale" was released in 2013 via Hyperion while Marvel released its own graphic novel backstory collection for the Rumple-Belle pairing, according to THR.

"Red's Untold Tale" will be released on Sept. 22.

"Once Upon a Time" recently wrapped up its fourth season. Vine Report says that Season 5 will be known as the "Era of Dark Emma."

According to Spoilers Guide, Season 5 will feature Emma tapping into her dark side. However Hook, Charming or Snow might be able to stop Emma from completely surrendering to the dark side if they can grab the dagger and gain full control of Emma.

The air date for "Once Upon a Time's" Season 5 premiere has not yet been announced.
